Origin, Emergence, Return | June 8—July 23, 2023

The underlying narrative of Origin, Emergence and Return traces a path that begins at the nascence of Korean Modern art and follows an outward spiral through its post-war emergence and lands squarely in a remarkable present still resounding with the decades of loss, growth, and accelerated development. This is the story shared by all three artists presenting in this exhibition, each of them born and situated in distinct generations of Korea’s contemporary history, studied abroad finding inspiration and direction, and through the sequences of their lives, repatriated to live and work in the country of their birth.

Origin, Emergence, Return 전시의 줄거리는 한국 현대 미술의 태동부터 시작되어 전후 회복을 꾀하며 수십 년에 걸쳐 전후 고도 압축 성장이라는 상향 나선을 그리며 도달한 현재와 역사적 맥락을 그리고자 한다. 전후 수십 년이 품었던 상실의 아픔, 피땀과 희생으로 일궈낸 성장, 가슴 벅찬 오늘에 다다른 한국이라는 땅과 한국인의 가슴 속에 울려 퍼지는 그것 말이다. 이번 전시에 참여하는 세 명의 작가 모두가 공유하는 이야기이기도 하다. 한국 근현대사의 서로 다른 세대에 태어나 영감과 방향을 찾기 위해 해외 유학을 했고, 삶이 이끄는 길을 좇아 자신이 태어난 고국까지 되돌아왔고 한국을 고향이라 부르며 살고 활동하는 이들이다.
