영상 <달집태우기>는, 예술의 기원에 대한 근본적인 질문(특히, ‘숭고’와 ‘미’를 배경으로 하는 예술적 시차), 숯의 본질, 이배의 예술철학, 등을 함축적으로 상징하고 있다. 예술의 기원은 의례(특히, 제천祭天의식)에서 찾을 수 있다. 인간의 간절한 소망이 하늘에 닿기를 바라는 의례는 절대타자와의 보편적인 소통의 형식이었고, ‘숭고’와 ‘미’의 모체가 되었다. 이배가 오랫동안 관심을 가져왔던 서예 역시, 하늘의 뜻을 알고자 하는 갑골문에서 시작되었다. ‘달집태우기’도 하늘(달)과 땅(인간)의 소통을 위한 의식이다. 하늘과 인간의 매개체로 의례에 사용되는 제물, 사물, 등은 특권적 권력과 영향력을 지닌다. 불의 의식을 거친 숯은 의례의 지속성을 상징하고 그 효과를 연장하여, 인간을 보호하고 치유한다. 숯에 잠재적 형태로 남아있는 불씨는 달(하늘)로 오르려는 속성이 있는데, 이배의 예술도 그러하다. 그는 “좀 더 높은 뭔가를 꿈꾸고, 이를 좀 더 멀리 보낼 수 있기“를 바란다. 달집은 스스로를 태우면서 하늘로 향한 길을 만들고, 이를 향해 내려오는 달빛과 마주친다. 전시장에서, 숯은 그 자신 불완전 연소된 상태로 머무르며, 관람객의 시선과 사유를 통해 함께 완전 연소되어 달빛을 찾아 오른다.
Lee Bae’s video Daljip Taeugi (Burning a house of Moon) quietly deals with ideas concerning the origin of art (including the parallax between the sublimity and the beauty of art), the essence of charcoal, and Lee’s artistic philosophy. The origin of art can be traced back to rituals, particularly those offered to the heavens (祭天). Offering sacrifice and prayer to the heavens was common as means to reach out to the absolute other, the progenitor to both the sublime and the beautiful. The origin of calligraphy can also be traced back to similar rituals. The need to understand fortune, to align oneself to the will of the heavens manifested in hieroglyphics, first as inscriptions on bones and tortoise carapaces. Those very hieroglyphics developed into prototypal characters and later as Chinese characters we now know.
Daljip Taeugi is a seasonal ritual of similar correspondence between heaven (moon) and earth (humans). Objects involved in rituals are thought to assimilate or inherit certain privileges of power and influence. As such an object born from the ritual burning the moon house, charcoal is an embodiment of the ritual and its auspicious power. The rising glow and sparks of ember in the potentiated form of charcoal rises up to the moon, much like Lee's artistic aspiration. He longs to "envision elevation, to project even further." The burning of the moon house opens a path to the heavens, and within the exhibition hall, charcoal remains incomplete in its fiery consummation, full of potential, demanding the gaze and appreciation of spectators to be set ablaze, free to rise and seek the blessing of the moon.
